Mr. Oliver Malabanan on Digital Ethnography

Introduction on Digital Ethnography

Ethnography is a research strategy that deals with the scientific description of specific human cultures. It is often used for gathering empirical data on human societies. Data collection is often done through observation, interviews, questionnaires, etc. Ethnography aims to describe the nature of those who are being studied through writing.

On the other hand, Digital Ethnography at its simplest is merely the application of new technologies to the process of ethnography. The critical distinction is that while traditional ethnographers physically immerse themselves in distinct places and their cultures, digital ethnographers capitalize on wired and wireless technologies to extend classic ethnographic methods, like participant observation, beyond geographic, as well as temporal, boundaries. This method is ideally suited to documenting the fluidity and flexibility already distinguishing contemporary cultures and communities. Participants communicate their experience via the Internet and other digital technologies. Digital ethnographers gather these details, whether they are in the form of words, images, or audio files, and determine their significance as they are played out in the context of participants’ lives. Digital ethnography use data-gathering methods such as site perusal and online interviewing. These are generally text-based techniques transplanted on to the Internet. Digital Ethno concentrates more on how ethnographic data gathering can be extended to the Internet and wireless communication devices in new and creative ways, especially in light of recent software, hardware, and protocol adoption.

Opinion on our subject professor
We chose Sir Oli as our subject professor because we know that he has a unique way of sharing his knowledge to his students. We thought that it would be "cool" if we made him as our subject professor. As you will see on his lecture video, the students on his class are really enjoying their recitation and discussion as they are going through the class. Even us who was only supposed to take the video of his lecture felt the spirit of his discussion. Everyone was listening to him while he was in front cracking some of his jokes. We really enjoyed having him as our subject professor, the only thing is that we are currently having some delay on finishing our requirements for this project. J
